THEIR BODY

Project Statement:

Their Body - a multimedia exhibition - brings light to the social and historical objectification of women, where they no longer are seen as equal individuals to their male counterparts. Driven by experiences in which I’ve felt the loss of ownership of my own narrative and form, in combination with the exploration of the representation of women in classical art and popular culture, I examine the deconstruction and restriction of the female form, from a singular being to its breakdown into objects. Becoming no longer a person but a thing.

Ch 1: Restriction

Photo Series

Restriction in the human experience, the body tied, restrained, and intertwinned with foreign identities. Ownership of the self taken way.

Ch 2: DEHumanize

Short Film

Shaped by a media-driven framework, this short film created from archival footage shows that dehumanization is not specifically enforced by a singular gender, but widely upheld. Accompanied by a self written voice over that questions “Am I just an object to you? Something for you to use and discard.” Highlighting the ever present message that is still prevalent in society today. A major influence on this work is Love is the Message, The Message is Death by Arthur Java, whose structured collage messaging sparked the inspiration for the creation of this short film.
